Dengue = Water Therapy, Durian and Tawa-tawa

Dengue Fever is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes mostly occurring in the tropics. It is a life-threatening disease that is currently been attacking people from all ages here in the Phillipines. Most common victims are the children. 

Even me, I suffered from this horrible silent killing disease brought to us by mosquitoes. When I was admitted to the hospital, I felt very weak and somewhat lost my appetite. Also before going to the hospital, i think it was about 3-4 days that I had an on and off high-fever. What's funny about it was during my working hours I felt very fine. So when my girlfriend knew about my on-off fever, she told me to drink lots of water so i wont be dehydrated because we already suspected that i had a dengue. So I did continue the water therapy even when I was admitted. 

When I was in the hospital, my 2 other roommates there also was diagnosed with dengue. One was very critical who had a 4 platelet where in the normal was 150 up and the other one was just same as mine, not that low in platelet count. Their families advise us to let me eat some anti-dengue fever foods. One of them was the Tawa-tawa tea. ewww. I already knew about this tea cause I was hospitalized with dengue before and this tea made me even more sick with just having a small zip. Even though they said it could be very rewarding and could make me recover faster, whew, I really refused taking it. Even smelling it I felt like throwing up already. Plus! My doctor said some of this tea could make a patient acquire diarrhea so I had a very concrete reason not to have a dose of that deadly alternative med.   

The next item they want me to eat was durian. Durian by the way is a very delicious fruit native here in Davao City. During the time when I was in the hospital, that was inline with durian season. Lots of durian vendors along the streets with very reasonable prices. So I told my self, "there, thats what I like". So I told my sister about that too and she planned to buy some durian outside immediately. While I was having lunch that day, I over heard the nurse telling the other patient, "know what, Durian is not allowed here inside the hospital cause its smell is very strong." Damn! There goes my favorite. There goes the food I wanna eat even I kinda lost my appetite. Whew! So, after the nurse left the room the other person attending to my roommates said, "nah, we can always sneak in some durian meat guys don't worry too much". And immediately, I texted my sister to hide it when they get in. Hahaha. So, when my sister came back she had this 3 durian seeds, coated with very rich and delicious smelly meat inside a small transparent cellophane. And I enjoyed it even I still want more. Hahah. 


Now, if ever you will suffer from dengue or on-off fever try this combination: 
Drink Lots of Water

Take Paracetamol for Fever

 
 
Eat Durian

Have some ewww Tawa-tawa Tea



And Eat A Lot!

BH for Desert

Young coconut meat and juice with milk. They say its good for those people who have urinary problems. By the way the ingredients came from my mother's friend's birthday. They have too many ingredients so they gave some to their visitors and my mother was one of those who received. That is why its "BH" short for "bring home" foods from a party or any other celebration with lots of food in it.

Have a Drink for Your Heart

There many medicines that people created in order to give care for our hearts. Among the very popular technique to give care to our heart is to have a healthy diet and exercise. But as time pass by, there are many studies that resulted to the manufacturing of artificial drugs to care for our hearts. But there are many researchers and health specialist said that wine, which is an alcohol drink has a very good effect to our health especially with our heart.

According to Wikipedia, Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is constituent in red wine. Because of resveratrol, some studies indicated that red wine do increase the formation of good cholesterol and decrease bad ones. Thus, drinking red wine can help us for caring our hearts, especially those with heart diseases.

But as what everybody always said, "Too Much is Bad for your Health". So just drink moderately and responsively.

Sorbetes, Sorbeteros and Customers

Sorbetes is our version of ice cream. It is usually peddled by Sorbeteros from street carts here in the Philippines. It is usually served in a small wafer or sugar cones and bread buns. The main ingredient of sorbetes is coconut milk. Unlike other ice creams which are made from cow's milk or any other animal milk it is more cheaper so, everyone can afford it. And here are the actor and props in action during Davao's Kadayawan festival this year in the street of San Pedro.

How about Squid and Pork with Vegetables for dinner?

I had a very fine diner today. Thanks to my mother, I always have. Now for our menu for our dinner, Ginisang Squid and Pork with Vegetables. By the way, the Pork was what was left from our morning meal. We normally do not cook during lunch. My mother cooks our meals during morning to be enough to reach for our lunch also, that is what we call budgeting 101. She cooks extra amount of viand and even rice.

I did placed the squids on top of the rice and separate the vegetables in another small bowl. I eat the squid with rice, then after that I eat the vegetables alone. I just love these vegetables, I love eating them. Cheers!

Gisa is a way of cooking. For us, Gisa or Ginisa is making use of onion and garlic. First is add oil to a hot pan. Then add the garlic, when its in golden color you can now add the sliced onions.

Grilled Pork with Radish

I did a last minute decision yesterday when my mother asked me on what we would be having for our dinner that night. Normally, I do request for any viand with soup or we call is "sabaw". I dunno why but i always eat more when we have soup on the table. Maybe it does help in swallowing the food. It's easier to swallow the rice though when there's a little tasty liquid with it or soup. But the situation yesterday was quite different, we lack time for preparation that is. So i went to have a look what we have inside our ref. Then I saw lots of onions and the first thing that came to my mind was grilled pork! Weird, but that's how it was. So i went out to and bought about half kilo pork then my mother grilled it. I also bought some radish to garnish our meal. After about half an hour, we have our very delicious Grilled Pork with Radish.

Now, you may wonder what's the connection of the onion and grilled pork and radish. Actually, our family loves to mix our sauce and grilled pork in one dish. Other people call it "Kilawin", but i don't cause plain pork is not the ideal meat to use for that dish. That is my opinion only. Maybe some other time i can also blog about it. So, regarding the onion thing, our dipping sauce is the one with onion on it. I, personally do this dipping sauce almost all the time. I chopped onions and tomatoes, then mixed them with soy sauce and vinegar. After that, add some chili, and pinches of salt and powered pepper. Slice some calamondin or calamansi then squeeze and mixed to soy sauce vinegar mixture. Now make sure that the whole mixed sauce would be enough that there will be extra for dipping when it is poured or mixed with the chopped, grilled pork. Normally, after the pork is grilled its dry. So, that sauce will be absorbed by the meat, thus making it juicy again. Also, I almost forgot about the crushed ginger, it adds a very good aroma when soaked in the hot(when the pork is still hot, the sauce would also be heated a bit) sauce. Now, when we have this in our meal, after eating I always have this after effect due to the presence of the onion. Cause I dunno again what is with it but I love the taste of onion with moist rice, tasty and juicy grilled pork, semi-spicy and sour sauce and quite crunchy radish. Wew, that makes me hungry just describing it. Here are some of the pictures, by the way.






Recipe
  • Pork, stomach area is the best 
  • Radish, chopped in thin circular slices
  • Onions, makes your breath smells eww..hehe
  • Calamansi, this can replace vinegar
  • Chili, hot! hot!
  • Ginger, aroma
  • Soy Sauce, main sauce
  • Vinegar, sour taste(optional)
  • Pepper, powder is recommended, crushed will do also
  • Salt, if the soy sauce is not that salt enough or very sour

Steps
  • Grill the pork. Chop it after.
  • Mix them all up! The taste it, if it's fine then EAT! And have a BAD BREATH!
